African Born 3D: Tips to design your own 3D prints

The demand for 3D printing is at an all-time high thanks to the accessibility of various machines today, especially here in Kenya. At first glance, it may seem simple enough as all you need to do is choose a specific model from your computer and the machine will start printing away. However, it’s much more complicated than that as modelling 3D figures is extremely hard, especially if you don’t know what to do.

Luckily, you won’t have to worry about going through this learning curve alone as we here at African Born 3D have your back! Here at our company, we want to help aspiring 3D printers in Kenya with designing through the following tips!

Exaggerate small details

One of the most important things you need to remember when 3D printing is attention to detail. If you’re going to print something like, let’s say a dragon, make sure to exaggerate tiny details such as its scales, horns and more.

This is because these details can disappear during the printing process which can be a bummer. After all, you can’t undo a print and you’re forced to redesign and reprint another model if ever you forget something.

Make hollow designs

A huge problem that 3D designers continuously endure is having to buy expensive materials to print their designs. That’s why when designing a 3D model, we recommend making it hollow to save up on resin which can run expensive at times, especially if you’re buying high-quality ones. However, make sure not to make it too hollow as this can make the model itself fragile.

Don’t print in one go

When it comes to 3D printing, one thing that’s often overlooked is printing the entire model piece by piece. When this happens, the result may turn out fragile because they’re connected by thin layers of resin. Moreover, doing this isn’t practical when it comes to time because bigger pieces will take longer to finish.

Instead, we recommend printing one part after another. Once you’ve finished printing every part, you can proceed to assemble them yourself. Keep in mind that you need to plan this during the designing process so you can create a link between two or more parts and connect them later on.

Design your 3D model today!

Now that you’ve learned about the simple tips that can instantly level up your 3D printing game, it’s time for you to try them out for yourself! These techniques may not seem like much at first but once you incorporate them into your design, you’ll end up with a much better-looking 3D model.
